The Power to Defend the Earth.
It was a concept and goal all at once, an ideal to aspire to and a nearly sacred promise passed from Grandparent to grandchild. A hundred years ago Fa Galswith has protected the Earth even when all she wanted, more then anything was to return to her family and have what had been done to her undone. But when the world had needed her the most she, along with others, stood up and waged a secret war against the invading Fury and maintained the peace and independence of the Earth.
She had been kidnapped as a child and taken to Gara-teus, the Fury homeworld, alongside two other human girls and used in experiments, to learn about humans and their limits, their compatibility with Furies and if they would make for a good Battle Thrall species. Experiments that included a painful serious of genetic recombination experiments to combine human and Fury genetic material that caused as much damage as it did to empower them. Damage that left all three girls infertile, something they didn’t learn until after the war was over and the first inklings of dreams of families had started to enter their heads.
The shuffle of ancient paper filled the small reading room the in Galswith cabin as Liek gingerly turned a page in one of his Grandmother’s journals. She had meticulously recorded the events of the war and the aftermath in a series of journals, the first being written shortly after they where broken out by Ro-gantus. The young man’s heart broke as he read the pages detailing his Grandmother’s discovery of her infertility.
The entry just before it, written just after the entry detailing the J Number’s bittersweet victory over Ga-Ravan and the Fury solemn decision to meet the end of the species with grace and dignity, rather then seeking refuge on Earth, had been about her dreams for the future. Wanting to marry and have a massive family. A pit had formed in his stomach reading about the kind of man she hoped to meet and the seven sons and seven daughters she hoped to bring into the world.
The next entry had been unbearable to read.
Shaky, scrawled handwriting, a stark contrast to the beautiful script of earlier pages, filled the pages as she tried her best to maintain the meticulous nature of the journals despite her own emotions, quite literally, dripping on to the page, smudging the text. The pages where warped and distorted from the dried tears, shed so long ago. Fresh tears had formed in Liek’s own eyes at the clear heartbreak and distress of his Grandmother when he read through the entry, but he’d held them back, refusing to damage the pages further.
But the J Numbers did not take the discovery lying down. They had significant resources at their disposal, everything accrued assets of the Fury infiltrators had been tied up in a complex series of trusts and lawyeress, but all threads lead back to Rudee Shiro and Cay-luum Gran-cher. And both men where determined not to leave three of their own without hope. Rudee contacted the greatest fertility specialists and geneticists in the world, no expense was spared, in hopes one may have an idea to help. No specialists could help and the geneticists admitted the technology to change the girls on that level was beyond human science, undoing the damage was even further beyond human science. If it was possible at all.
Cay-luum sought other means, along with his wife, Carolina Sherbert, who was now a Colonel in the burgeoning Earth Defence Force, pulled strings and searched even unlikely sources for any information they could. For the sake of their younger siblings-in-arms they desperately searched every archive and legend they could get their hands on for a glimmer of hope.
And they found something...
It was in one of Cay-luum’s journal that he found the entries detailing the discovery. In a dusty old archive among the Earth government’s files, forgotten for generations and well passed the age where it would automatically become declassified was a collection of old files. They detailed the exploits of a group of heroes who defended the Earth from a series of local threats, great and small. Threats long forgotten by the people at large like a self-proclaimed emperor, the Red Ribbon Army and an apparent Demon King, although newer pages added later identified the green man as actually being an alien. And in defeating that last foe, saving the King of the time, thus the extensive file on the group.
In those files Cay-luum had seen multiple mentions of a set of mythical wish granting orbs. The files where dismissive of the orbs, comparing them to an old legend told as a bedtime story to children. They called them the Dragon Balls. Cay-luum was not as quick to dismiss these mythical spheres as quickly as the report writers.
His journal went on to explain an old legend from Gara-teus. A few decades after the plague that decimated the Fury’s numbers and forced them to abandon their empire a spaceship crashed on their world and a green skinned alien was pulled from the wreckage. After being nursed back to health the green man beg for refuge, claiming his home world had been devastated by natural disasters and he had nowhere else to turn. The Fury monarch at the time readily agreed and ingratitude the green alien presented a gift to the royal family, seven glowing orange spheres that could apparently grant the wish of the one who summoned the Dragon that dwelled within.
The gift was graciously accepted, but the dragon would never be summoned. The green man would spend the rest of his days living a humble life caring for the life of Gara-teus, eventually bringing forth a child of his own while also mentoring many Fury children in his speciality along the way, the work of the man and his child being instrumental in designing the biosphere preservation systems for the Basireous’ Protection Class Arcships long after his death by old age. The spheres, on the other hand, where separated immediately, the monarch deciding that the power of a wish was too dangerous for any one person, and had seven of his most trusted Knights scatter them across the world and hide them in trials only the most virtuous and capable could hope to pass.
In the hundreds of years since the trials where set up only one of the spheres was ever recovered, and that was Cay-luum himself. He’d been tasked with the retrieval mission by Ga-Ravan during the late stages of the war and succeeded in the Trial of the Stalwart by the skin of his teeth. It had been a harrowing experience that shook the man to his core, and forced him question everything he’d been doing up until that point and why.
When he was confronted by the J Numbers, by chance, on his way to present the sphere to the Knight Marshal, the Trials tests and questions allowed Carolina to break through the mental walls the Knight had built up to shield his heart from the ache he felt every time they fought. He finally accepted that he could no longer deny his feelings for Carolina, and that a True Knight would not turn his sword on his own love if doing so meant following a leader who was besmirching the Honour of all Fury.
After reading all this Liek had searched among the items stored in the cabin, knowing many of the possessions of the J Numbers had been sequestered somewhere in the storage room. It took hours, but eventually he found it hidden alongside various other artefacts Cay-luum brought with him from Gara-teus. Just like the man had written in his journal, after the Fury world had exploded the sphere had lost it’s lustre, turning to stone.
Contemplating the orb the young man recalled why Cay-luum had focused on the legend of the Dragon Balls so much to record the stories from Gara-teus; the stories where too similar to be a coincidence. The records from Earth confirmed they where indeed real and a set existed on Earth. If that was the case they could be used to wish for the girls to have their fertility restored.
Fa’s journals revealed what happened next. The J Numbers discussed the matter at length, for days before reaching a resolution. Cay-luum and Rudee had even pieced together a proto-type device for seeking the Dragon Balls by cobbling together parts of both Earth and Fury origin with details from the reports. But in the end it was decided that seeking the Balls was like opening Pandora’s box, if knowledge of them spread more and more enemies could hear of them and come to Earth to have nefarious wishes granted.
And so Fa and her friends sacrificed their dreams of family so that others would not lose theirs.
Liek sat with his face in his hands, the cabin empty save for him and deathly quiet. Her dreams, the personal happiness she had yearned for, had been within her grasp, but she let it go for the sake of others. The young man lifted his gaze, looking over the stacks of journals, the cold dead orb from Gara-teus and finally… the prototype dragon radar.
His Grandmother had rejected the possibilities for reasons the young man did not blame her for. But he could not, to achieve his goals, to fulfil his promise, he needed to exploit this resource. His mind was made up, he would use the Dragon Balls… and with them he would gain the means of gaining...
