The prototype Dragon Radar created decades ago by Rudee and Cay-luum sat on the table in front of Liek as he fiddled with another device in his hands, a fine welding tool of Fury origin clutched in one hand as the other held the casing steady. Light flashed as he secured another component in place, his eyes glancing from the prototype that he’d pull open to see the internal workings of, over to the ancient schematics Master Roshi had given him.
One may wonder why the ancient hermit had the schematics for a Dragon Radar, but the reason was fairly simple. Nearly two hundred years ago, when the children of his old friends and students where approaching their twilight years it was decided leaving the designs hidden in some vault belonging to Capsule Corp, which one of the children had become CEO of, had too many risks. Some future generation may discover the designs and seek to use the Dragon Balls for nefarious ends. So the remaining working Radars had been dismantled, designs had been purged from computer systems and the hard copy schematics had been given to Roshi for safe keeping.
So when Liek had visited Roshi to follow up on the Legend of the Dragon Balls story the old man had told him, which the youth had dismissed as tall tales at first, the old man had first questioned the young man about why he would seek the mythical orbs. When the boy reconfirmed that he wanted to further his training efforts, and not just use them as a shortcut, the old man relented and turned over the schematics.
And so Liek had spent the last few days scrounging parts together and tinkering away at his own hybrid design. The old version from the schematics called for pieces of technology that hadn’t been manufactured for nearly one hundred and fifty years, so the youth had to substitute those parts anyway. Some of those, and others, he’d replaced with Fury components. For example, the batteries in the old design where obsolete even by Earth standards, and when compared to Fury Orgone batteries of the similar size where hopelessly under powered. With the Fury batteries the device could operate for hundreds of years, even with the increased power demands of the modern UHD screen.
The youth had also painstakingly reconfigured most of the connection lines of the circuit board itself, replacing the rare earth connections with Fury crystal lines, improving the communication speeds of the components by several orders of magnitude. Finally, the last change had been to run the program, which Master Roshi also provided, through a conversion algorithm that had been made during the creation of Carolina’s armour a century ago. The algorithm could take any Earth made binary program and convert the code perfectly into Fury helix code. A safety measure on Liek’s part, this way if anyone stole his Dragon Radar they couldn’t just copy the program over to a replica made from non-Fury components, since the Helix code could only work with Fury circuitry.
With a sigh of triumph the youth clicked the casing together and turned the screen on using one of the multiple buttons on the device, another modification that the youth had. Seriously, what idiot thought a single, all purpose button was a good idea? Well, with the new screen came greater detail, so more buttons to cycle through the information only made sense.
The screen lit up and after a short boot time it started displaying a detailed overhead map of the area, thanks to Liek incorporating GPS imaging and functionality into the device, along with longitude, latitude and altitude details. The device pinged and instantly marked a signal earning a smile from the youth.
Then he blinked and suddenly he wasn’t in the workshop of his cabin anymore. He was… he wasn’t sure where he was. Green light flowed through the ether, congregating in different spots, endlessly flowing in an eternal cycle.
There, in that void a figure materialised. Clad in flowing robes a woman stood, most of her body hidden but her lower face visible, displaying the series of triangular markings on her cheeks. The figure spoke before the young man could formulate a question, “Inheritor of the Fury, this marks the first Trial you have completed, the Trial of the Casting. Always remember that the power of the Fury is not just an instrument for war, but also for bringing creation. May Basireous’ Light Guide your Path, and Volda’s Darkness await at Journey’s End.” The woman bowed and suddenly the youth was back in his cabin.
Trial…? The Trial of the Dragon Balls of Gara-teus? Was that what she meant? Was she… one of the seven ancient Knights who set up the Trials?
Well, that just made things even more interesting, didn’t they?
