The radar had picked up the signal of another of the Dragon Balls and so Liek had continued his quest to gather the sacred orbs had have a wish granted. Even now he wasn’t entirely certain what his wish would be, but he was starting to get an idea of what he wanted. The Gau-la-Furia still rested at the bottom of the ocean and the sooner he could restore it to working order the better, and using the Dragon Balls to gain the resources to do that seemed like the best course of action.
As the youth approached where the radar was detecting the ball he was suddenly over come by a bright light. As his vision cleared he found himself standing in the middle of devastation and ruin. He recognised the area, it was East City, but it had been reduced to smouldering ruins, the building shattered and town, nothing more then burning husks as pillars of acrid smoke billowed into the heavens turning the light from the sun crimson.
‘Another Trial? It must be!’ Liek realised, 'So which am I up against this time?’ he wondered. He had a rough idea about what each of the Trials was about, Cay-luum hadn’t thought to record the known details about the Trials in his journals. He likely didn’t think to since the archives on the Gau-la-Furia stored the sum of all Fury history and knowledge already. Unfortunately Liek wasn’t in a position to reactivate the ship even enough to power the archives back up, thus couldn’t investigate those details.
Even as he pondered that the devastation became more and more real to him, until he was convinced it was reality!
Looking the burning ruins over again the youth wondered aloud, “Who could have done all this?” Examining the destruction more closely he noted slicing and scoring that was all to familiar. Shaking his head he denied what he was seeing, “No… these are from Furiemshinken attacks… but… who...?” A land landed on the youth’s should and he whirled around to see who had touched him only to stop short as his voice caught in this throat.
The figure was shorter then him, but stood proud with a straight back. Emerald green armour clung to her athletic body offering both protection while also fuelling her combat abilities. The young man recognised every part of that armour intimately, the greeves that connected to the short heeled boots, the gauntlets with the thick forearm plates, the four large spikes linked to the pauldrons, the way the chest plates covered practically and yet emphasised the chest… and the withered face that became visible when the woman raised her visor. What he didn’t recognise was the cruelty in those golden eyes or the sinister edge to the smile she gave him, “Well done, my Grandson! The defenders of this pathetic world didn’t stand a chance against you!”
Liek’s Grandmother gestured towards something nearby. Almost too scared to look the young man shifted his gaze and what he found nearly made his heart stop from the shock. Bodies strewn across the ground, worse still he recognised every one of them. His subordinates from the Tri-Stars lay scattered and slumped over and among the debris, red stains around them as they lay unmoving. But they where not all; Zaks lay slumped against the crumbling wall of a build with an Orgone crystal pierced through her chest, her face stained with blood and tears. Clutched his her arms was the body of Opherla, equally broken and lifeless.
The youth’s world spun and he nearly fell, only to be caught by his Grandmother who stroked his hair, “That’s right, they where your friends. Weren’t they?” She laughed, “And yet, you betrayed them so easily when I asked for your help in paving the way for the Empire to claim this world.” She turned his head to the sky where the shadow of a dozen ships of the same class as the Gau-la-Furia began to descend through the blackened clouds.
Chocking on a sob, the sight of his friends slaughtered bodies was enough to feel like his heart was being ripped apart, but to be told he was the one who did it? No! That couldn’t be true! And his Grandmother… she was aiding the Fury in an invasion… and he was helping?!
No! NO NO NO!
He lashed out and pushed the woman off of him! Roaring he unleashed a blast of ki in her direction with all of his might before screaming, “STOP IT! STOP LYING!!” He materialised his Broken Arm crystals and sent them flying at the woman as she flew out of the dust could his last attack created, “I’d never betray my friends like that! Not for the Fury and not even for you!” The woman easily deflected his Broken Arms, shattering them, but Liek pressed the attack, closing into melee range and unleashing a barrage of punches and kicks, “I swore to protect the Earth!” He grit his teeth as he recalled the pain in Zaks’ face as she delivered the killing blow on Daikon, and how it continued to linger with her after, resolving himself to face the same pain, perhaps even deeper, “And I will, even if it means fighting my own family!”
Fa Galswith caught the young man’s fists and halted his attack and, in that instant, it all vanished into an endless white. The teen looked around, trying to make sense of what was happening as the old woman smiled at him. The cruelty melted away from her eyes and the sinister edge on her smile was replaced by gentle kindness. Confusion welled within the youth as his rage faded as quickly as it had come. Through his telepathic senses he became aware of how the naturally occurring Orgone around him was actively soothing his emotions.
Another figure appeared, A tall man, clad in ancient looking Fury armour, his cheeks marked with arrow-like bars. The man nodded to him and said, “Thus marks the conclusion of the Trial of the Stalwart, Inheritor. A true Fury must always remember where their faithfulness truly lies and be ready and willing to uphold what it is they stand for, even if it means facing the ones they hold dear as foes.” The ancient Fury Knight lifted his sword in an equally ancient salute, “May Basireous’ Light Guide your Path, and Volda’s Darkness await at Journey’s End.”
With those words Liek found himself back in the real world, the radar beeping away, showing the way to the Dragon Ball. Tightening his grip on the device the youth bit his lip. If the remaining Trails where anything like this… then his Quest was going to be one harrowing experience indeed.
