West City was touted as a symbol of human ingenuity by it’s residents and tourist industry, and not without evidence to support the lofty claim. It was the home to Capsule Corporation, which remained a major player in technology and development even centuries after the passing of the genius inventors who founded it. It was the home of towering skyscrapers seamlessly blended with lush parks and tranquil rivers. Although not as much as a course setter in history as it was two hundred years ago, it still remained one of the more beautiful and technologically advanced cities on Earth.
In Liek’s opinion it was one of the nicer cities the humans had built. Not as overdeveloped as East City, not as cold as North City and not as remote as South City. Enough urban and industrial build up to have everything within easy reach, even for normal people, while also providing employment opportunities while also keeping enough nature to keep everything feeling alive and not a concrete and glass prison.
Returning his gaze back to the present he saw that he was approaching a corner on the path at the intersection of two main roads, both of which where very busy with traffic rumbling along. Vehicles ranging from personal cars to massive trucks hauling cargo streamed by along one road until the lights changed, the vehicles waiting then taking their turn to start moving. He’d seen this kind of scene many times from the skies, likening the flow of vehicles to cells in the bloodstream, but this had really been the first time he’d seen it up close.
Normally he would not see something like this since he’d just be soaring overhead, but he’d opted for a change of pace, simply strolling through the city to experience the sights and sounds of a thriving, bustling city. It was a novel experience for the young man after spending basically his whole life living in seclusion in the wilderness.
As he reached the corner he noticed an old woman standing there looking shaky on her feet, with her hands on a walking frame, shopping bags hanging handles of the frame, worried old eyes looking at the traffic buzzing past. In that moment the young man noted that he had seen her standing at the same crosswalk moments earlier before the lights had changed. Has she not crossed because she was worried about the traffic?
“Excuse me, Ma’am?” He asked as he approached her, “Did you need some help?”
Looking started the old woman smiled after a moment and replied, “Oh! Thank you, young man.” She placed a hand to her chest and said, “The lights change so quickly, and I can’t walk as fast as I used to. And carrying these bags only makes it harder.” She sighed, “I try to stay independent, but as I grow older it gets harder… it may be time for me to take my daughter up on that offer to move in with her…”
Liek smiled, “Well, I think you’re doing great so far Ma’am.” His words brought a smile to the old woman’s lips and he continued, “For now, let’s just worry about crossing the road? What would you like me to do? I could carry your shopping for you and walk alongside you, if you like.” He flexed his arms and half-joked, “Or I could carry you and your bags?”
The woman laughed, “Oh ho! As much as I would like to be carried, I’m sure my late husband wouldn’t approve.” She grinned, “It would be wonderful if you could carry the bags and escort me young man, thank you.”
And so the young hybrid collected the woman’s shopping bags and held them with one hand while holding the old woman’s arm with the other, and gently crossed the road by her side. He stood with himself between the old lady and the oncoming traffic, swapping sides in the middle, but luckily the caution was unneeded as all the motorists waited patiently for the pair to cross.
Once they reached the other side the old woman smiled up at Liek and said, “Thank you, young man.” She reached into her purse as she spoke, “Just wait a moment and I’ll get you a reward.”
The youth held up his hands in protest, a smile on his face, “No need Ma’am, just doing what any Knight of the Fury would.” Before she could reply or protest the young man walked away briskly.
“Knight of the Fury…?” The woman muttered, “I swear I’ve heard that somewhere before…”
As Liek walked away a figure appeared before him, clad in Fury armour and spoke, “So ends the Trial of the Courteous. A True Fury will not hesitate to render aid, even to the lowest of the low or the feeblest of the feeble.” The finger bowed before saying, “May Basireous’ Light Guide your Path, and Volda’s Darkness await a Journey’s End.”
Blinking in surprise Liek suddenly heard a beeping from his pocket. Pulling out the source he found it coming from his Dragon Radar that had started detecting another Ball. Double checking the device the youth nodded before streaking off into the air.
