He’d heard stories about it, both as a child, and more recently from various sources. As a child his grandmother had told him about the terrible creature, more from legend and rumour, with what little his father had passed on, when he had asked about his tail one day. In more recent times he’d overheard people talking as he walked by, news reports about the dangers of Saiyans and so forth.
His grandmother had told him that in addition to his tail being a potential weak point that it was also a source of power, that under the right conditions it would allow him to assume a massive and mighty form capable of wielding tremendous power, but was almost entirely wild and destructive. She told him of ages past, when the Saiyans sought to conquer the Fury, seeing their noble warrior heritage and seeming low battle power as a prime way to prove their superiority. That the third and final attempt involved sending over a thousand of the races most elite warrior during the Fury home world, Gara-teous’ week long full moon period.
That elite force was defeated to the last man, but not before they did significant damage to the southernmost continent.
But there was more to it then that, there was that big tournament coming up. Liek had signed up to take a crack at that prize money and maybe find some fun opponents to test his mettle against. And while doing so he had heard the rumours and stories, Saiyans from the Empire where joining.
The Saiyan Empire, that ruthless and conquest addicted force. They senselessly moved from world to world killing everyone whether they fought or not and left the worlds nothing more then broken ruins in their wake. If they had been some swarm, driven by pure instinct to invade and consume as some biological imperative then the young man could forgive them, still oppose and even be willing to exterminate, but able to forgive. But they where not. They where conscious people, able to determine right from wrong, and yet they still engaged in such wasteful slaughter for their own self-satisfaction.
And he knew, that when the tournament was in full swing, there was a chance they would use the power hidden within, the power of the Great Ape. He didn’t know how. He knew it was tied to the full moon and required it to transform, but he figured that the Saiyans where not stupid. It stood to reason that they could figure out a way to induce the transformation without a physical moon.
Which presented three problems. The first being how to deal with all those Saiyans going ape. The transformation provided a massive boost in power even if it drove an untrained Saiyan wild. A bunch of rampaging monkey kaiju would inflict untold damage if they where not contained. Which lead to the second problem; if he transformed the same way, which he knew he could, he would go just as wild. He didn’t want that. The thought of harming innocents, even if unintentionally sickened the young man. So then was the third problem; what to do about all that?
For some time now he’d been considering what to do about it. On one hand, he could simply cut off his tail. If he did that he could pass for a normal human to most people, his two bloodlines evening out into a nicely normal human looking appearance. But on the other hand his tail was a part of him, he was comfortable in his own skin and loosing his tail would be like having a hand amputated. It was just… wrong. Objectively, if Liek’s goal had been to blend into human society and live a mundane, civilian, lifestyle cutting off his tail might actually have been a thing he would do without hesitation.
But he was following the Knight’s path. It was the only outward link the boy had to his Saiyan heritage, the only proof he held to that bloodline. Additionally he needed the power of the transformation to counter other Great Apes if it came to it. No, cutting it off was out of the question. To do so would be to reject his forebears, which would stain his honour as the Inheritor of the Fury.
No, he would seek another path. One his grandmother had informed him was possible; he would tame the savage beast within and make it’s power is own!
It was with this resolve that had drawn Liek to an isolated island far to the south of the Earth. This island, far from any signs of civilisation, far even from signs of wildlife, was the perfect setting for the boy to train. The island was so small the beast within would have no where to go, so distant from bystanders that none would come to harm, so uninhabited that even the ecosystem would escape without a scar.
He wasn’t entirely alone though. From a safe distance Master Roshi observed from his submarine, the vessel obscured underwater and the Master’s power suppressed so as to avoid the notice of a rampaging Great Ape if Liek failed in his endeavour. For hours prior to this attempt the two had discussed the problem, with the old Master relaying information from a long passed acquaintance, someone who knew all about controlling the Great Ape but never had need to train others, someone who told Roshi all about it simply so the knowledge wouldn’t be lost forever.
The boy sat with his legs crossed, waiting. His hands where cupped together and his eyes closed as the wind swept his hair and the ocean waves crashed on the island shore, spraying him with brackish droplets. Within his mind the teen’s thoughts where focused on the singular task he’d presented to himself, envisioning the struggle he would no doubt endure, picturing the task of grasping the reigns of his own body and wresting control back from the savage beast. He knew it would not be easy, and his imagined struggle was the best he could do to reflect that. But the difficulty was limited by his own inexperience. All he had to work with where stories. He’d never seen another Saiyan become the beast, nor transformed himself.
This would be his first time… and hopefully his preparations would be sufficient. It wasn’t the first time he’d prepared or done meditative training for this purpose. His Grandmother had couched him through it many times, but like him, her preparations where entirely speculative. Roshi’s couching was more informed, but like Liek and his Grandmother there was a distinct lack of first hand experience with the form.
Hopefully it would be enough.
He opened his eyes and turned them skyward.
Towards the full moon.
He felt it. Like a throbbing pulse ripping through his body from his very core. Clawing and ripping at his mind demanding to be let out. To kill. To destroy. To feast. Nothing would stand in it’s way as it sated it’s lust for blood. As Liek’s body changed, growing significantly in size, fur growing to cover almost all of his body he struggled against the savage murderous intent that welled up within.
As his face elongated into a snout and large horns burst from his head he roared, both physically and in his mind as he forged mental chains to bind the insidious will seeking to lay claim to his body. The chains strained and groaned at the force of the vile will as Liek’s mind slammed back against it with all the mental fortitude he could muster even as the beast inside redoubled it’s efforts to take over. Saiyan and Demon Pride, written into his very genes, one refusing to back down out of sheer stubbornness, then other refusing to allow something else to control it, kicked in and worked alongside his will to not allow the Beast to rule.
The great Demonic Ape stood tall upon the tiny island, thrusting it’s fists high into the air and let out a bellowing roar that almost made the island crumble under the vibrations of the beast’s mighty lungs. After another roar of triumph the beast began to float into the air before pumping both fists, “HAHAHA!!” He laughed as he thrust his fists into the heavens and grinned, “HOPE YOU’RE WATCHING! GRANDMA!!”
Inside the submarine Master Roshi hooted and hollered as he danced around the periscope, “Hot diggity! The boy did it! We’ve got an Ape on our side this time!”
